What is Shoe Change?

A shoe change is when a live dealer finishes with the cards in play and loads a new set. The shoe is the box the cards are dealt from, holding several decks shuffled together, and it is replaced when the cut card placed inside it is reached rather than when it is empty. The change matters more than it looks. Everything that has been dealt is discarded with the old shoe, so any record of what has come out — the roadmaps displayed beside a baccarat table, a running count kept by a player, a sense that one side is due — is reset to nothing. The new shoe is a fresh, independent set with no relationship to the one before it. This is where a common misreading lives. Roadmaps and result histories are presented so prominently on live tables that they invite the belief that the shoe has a pattern worth tracking. Within a shoe, the composition does change as cards are removed, which is the basis of card counting in blackjack; at a shoe change that information is destroyed. A pattern read across a shoe boundary connects two unrelated sets of cards, and betting on it is betting on nothing at all. Some tables also announce no more bets during the change and pause briefly, which is the clearest signal the round sequence has restarted.
