What is Data Subject Request?

A data subject request is a formal demand that an organisation hand over the personal data it holds about you. Under the European and UK data protection regimes it is a right rather than a favour, it costs nothing in ordinary cases, and the operator generally has one month to answer. Similar rights exist in a growing number of other jurisdictions with different names and deadlines. What comes back is usually broader than what the account pages show. A gambling operator holds identity documents, deposit and withdrawal records, complete betting and session history, communications with support, marketing consents and their history, and internal markers — the flags and categories attached to the account, including any responsible-gambling notes and, where relevant, the reasoning behind a restriction. That last category is the reason the right is worth knowing about. If an account has been limited, closed or held, the operator's own record of why is personal data about you, and a request reaches it where a support conversation frequently does not. It is also the practical way to reconstruct a session history longer than the interface will display, which matters when a complaint depends on a sequence of events months old. Two caveats keep expectations right. Not everything is disclosable — material engaging suspicious activity reporting is commonly exempt, and an operator does not have to hand over another person's data. And a request is not a dispute: it produces evidence, and the complaint that evidence supports still runs through the operator, the alternative dispute body named in the terms, and the regulator.
