What is Net Position?

Net position is the difference between everything you have staked in a session and everything that has come back. It is the only number that answers the question a player actually has — am I up or down — and it is deliberately hard to hold in your head while a game is running. The reason it is hard is design. A slot shows the last win prominently and the accumulated cost not at all, and a return smaller than the stake that just went in is presented with the same sound and animation as a genuine win. Over a session of a few hundred spins, a run of returns each worth less than its stake reads as a series of wins and subtracts from the balance the whole time. Great Britain's rules for online slots, in force since October 2021, require the game itself to display a player's net position and elapsed time during a session — a requirement aimed squarely at that gap between how a session feels and what it costs. Where that requirement does not apply, and it does not apply in most of the world, the number is usually available in the account history rather than on the screen where the decisions are made. The practical version needs no regulation. Note the balance when you start and look at it again when you stop, and use the account statement rather than the memory of the evening, because memory keeps wins and discards near-misses. A session where the net position is negative is not a failed session — it is the expected outcome of most sessions, and the specification says so before you begin.
